Medical Malpractice Insurance in South Carolina
Since 2019, the professional liability marketplace in South Carolina has been dominated by the state program administered through the South Carolina Medical Malpractice Association (SCMMA).

The SCMMA was formed during the merger between the South Carolina JUA and PCF. The association is tasked with paying down an accumulated deficit of over $100M. This is being done by assessing both SCMMA medical professionals as well as those medical professionals insured elsewhere. The assessments will continue until the deficit is eliminated.

Luckily for South Carolina physicians, favorable tort reform enacted by the state in 2005 has resulted in many of the largest national carriers actively providing coverage for medical professionals as an alternative to the SCMMA program.
